India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative turned 11 this week, and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is celebrating how it’s turned the country into a global manufacturing leader under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
Back in 2014, PM Modi kicked off ‘Make in India’ to bring back India’s manufacturing glory. Goyal shared on X that the past 11 years have brought huge wins: record foreign direct investment (FDI) pouring in, big jumps in ease of doing business rankings, India becoming the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, booming exports, and a surge in defence production.
The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme has sparked massive investments and created thousands of jobs. Plus, India’s startup scene—fueled by young entrepreneurs and women—has made it the third-largest innovation hub globally.
Goyal credits this success to teamwork from industries, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and everyday citizens embracing the Swadeshi spirit of self-reliance. He sees the next decades shaping an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat, where India leads on the world stage.
The minister also spotlighted India’s growing strength in defence manufacturing. “Under PM Modi’s guidance, we’ve hit key milestones in homegrown defence production, proving ‘Make in India’ works,” Goyal said.
Just last week, during celebrations for the program’s 10-year milestone, Goyal rolled out fresh initiatives to supercharge ‘Make in India’ and push India toward self-reliance. Developed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), these steps focus on streamlining operations and building a modern, competitive logistics network.
He launched Logistics Data Bank (LDB) 2.0 to make India’s economy more digital, investor-friendly, and export-ready. These moves aim to keep the momentum going as India eyes even bigger global wins.
