In Mumbai, India, nine leading universities from the United Kingdom—such as Southampton, Queen’s Belfast, and the University of Surrey—have received official approval to open new campuses in India under the National Education Policy (NEP). The news was shared by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a briefing on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit.
Misri highlighted that this marks a “silent revolution” in education. He noted that Southampton University already opened its first campus in Gurgaon last July and has welcomed its first cohort of students. The announcement comes at the same time Starmer is traveling across India in a high‑powered delegation that includes ministers, a 125‑strong business group, and the vice chancellors of the nine UK universities that plan to expand in India.
The universities to open campuses in India are:
– Southampton University – Gurgaon
– Queen’s Belfast – GIFT City
– Coventry University – GIFT City
– University of Surrey – GIFT City
– University of Bristol – GIFT City
– University of York – Mumbai
– University of Liverpool – Bengaluru
– University of Lancaster – Bengaluru
– University of Aberdeen – Mumbai
The UK government said the expansion will inject about £50 million into the Indian economy and position the UK as the country with the largest higher‑education presence in India. In 2022, international education generated £32 billion in UK export revenue, with almost £1 billion coming from overseas campuses.
India now has 40 million university students but needs 70 million places by 2035. By letting students study for a UK degree locally, the UK helps meet that demand while boosting jobs and economic growth back home.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with UK vice chancellors in Mumbai to celebrate the milestone. He praised the quality of British universities for their teaching, research, and innovation, and expressed excitement that more Indian students will soon gain access to world‑class education. The visit underscores the growing trade and educational ties between the UK and India and signals a new era of collaboration in higher education.
