National Zoological Park orders enquiry to ascertain the cause of sudden demise of African elephant ‘Shankar’ at Delhi Zoo

Sad Loss at Delhi Zoo: Beloved Elephant Shankar Passes Away at 29

In a heartbreaking moment for wildlife lovers, the National Zoological Park in New Delhi bid farewell to its cherished African elephant, Shankar. The 29-year-old gentle giant died suddenly on the night of September 17 at 8:00 PM, as announced by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Shankar had been a star resident at the Delhi Zoo for 27 years. He arrived from Zimbabwe in November 1998 and quickly won hearts with his calm demeanor and impressive stature. Visitors flocked to see him, and zoo staff treated him like family.

The day started normally for Shankar. On September 17 morning, keepers noticed he ate fewer leaves and grasses and had mild loose motions. But he still enjoyed his usual fruits, vegetables, and concentrate feed. The zoo’s veterinary team jumped in with treatment, and staff kept a close watch.

Things took a tragic turn around 7:25 PM when Shankar collapsed in his shed. Despite quick emergency care, he couldn’t be saved. Up until September 16, he showed no signs of illness or unusual behavior.

To find out what happened, authorities have launched an inquiry. A team of experts from IVRI Bareilly, along with the zoo’s health advisory committee and a Ministry representative, is carrying out a detailed post-mortem. They’ll collect samples for further tests before disposing of the remains properly.

"Shankar stood for strength, wisdom, and love. We’re all deeply attached to him, and his absence will hit the zoo team, visitors, and the whole conservation world hard," said NZP Director Sanjeet Kumar. He added that the zoo remains dedicated to animal welfare and wildlife conservation efforts nationwide.

Fans of Delhi Zoo and elephant conservation are mourning this loss. Shankar’s story reminds us of the joy these majestic animals bring and the importance of caring for them. Stay tuned for updates on the post-mortem results as the investigation continues.
