On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that three of his New York offices had been the target of bomb threats. The emails, all with the subject line “MAGA,” accused the 2020 election of being rigged and were sent to his Rochester, Binghamton and Long Island locations.
Schumer quickly notified law‑enforcement agencies, which immediately conducted full security sweeps. He added in a statement that everyone was safe and expressed gratitude for the “quick and professional response” that kept the offices secure for all New Yorkers.
He echoed a sentiment he has made many times: “As I have said many times, these kinds of violent threats have absolutely no place in our political system. No one—no public servant, no staff member, no constituent, no citizen—should ever be targeted for simply doing their job.”
The threats come as concerns about lawmakers’ safety rise amid a wave of political violence. Last month, Schumer asked the U.S. Capitol Police to provide “special protection” to Senators Mark Kelly (D‑Ariz.) and Elissa Slotkin (D‑Mich.) after the president’s remarks branding them as “seditious” for urging military personnel to “refuse illegal orders.” The House has likewise increased security, allocating $20,000 a month to members and launching a “Mobile Duress Program,” among other measures.
In addition, several representatives—such as Jared Golden (D‑Maine) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R‑Ga.)—have cited security worries when stepping down from the House; Golden will finish his term, while Greene is expected to resign next month. Over the past eighteen months, the country has seen a series of violent incidents, from the Butler, Pa., assassination attempt on Trump to shootings of Minnesota lawmakers, the arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and more.
