Op Sagar Bandhu: INS Sukanya carrying relief material arrives in Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee

On Monday, the Indian naval vessel INS Sukanya, under Operation Sagar Bandhu and loaded with relief supplies, arrived at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
EAM S. Jaishankar posted on X, saying, “INS Sukanya enters Trincomalee with relief materials.”

After Cyclone Ditwah sent floods and landslides across Sri Lanka, India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu to provide assistance.
Indian rescue teams are now working hand‑in‑hand with the Sri Lankan Air Force, Navy, Army, Police and local first responders to support affected communities. Evacuations, delivery of supplies and emergency aid are happening across the island.

Earlier, the Indian High Commission announced that a C‑130J aircraft, arriving in Sri Lanka on Sunday, had carried over 4 tonnes of BHISHM Modular Trauma Cubes.

Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India’s C‑130J aircraft, which arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday, carried more than 4 tonnes of BHISHM Modular Trauma Cubes — compact, durable mobile medical units equipped with diagnostic tools and surgical kits, designed for rapid deployment in disaster zones.

Mi‑17 helicopters from the Indian Air Force also evacuated 34 citizens, including children, from Kotmale to Colombo and distributed medical aid and food supplies.

Local media, citing the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), reported that the death toll has climbed to 355, with 366 people still missing due to the ongoing severe weather.
The DMC added that 1,118,323 people from 309,607 families have been affected by heavy rains, floods and landslides across several parts of Sri Lanka.

Communication difficulties continue to hamper rescue and coordination in the hardest‑hit areas.
The President’s Media Division noted that Sri Lankan telecom operators have agreed to prioritise emergency calls, thereby easing network congestion and bolstering the response effort.
