MP govt launches ‘Samadhan Yojana’ to waive off outstanding power bills

Bhopal – The Madhya Pradesh government rolled out a new plan called the Samadhan Yojana to help residents who have not paid their power bills for more than three months. The scheme, announced by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, offers a big relief: it can wipe out up to 100 % of the extra surcharge that is added to overdue electricity bills.

Why it matters

Out‑of‑pocket electricity costs have been a headache for many households and businesses. The Yojana is meant to give people a chance to catch up without the financial strain that rising surcharges cause. By forgiving the extra fee, the plan is also intended to improve trust between the public and the state’s power‑distribution system.

How it works

The scheme works on a simple rule: pay early, pay in one go, and save the most.

  • Domestic and agricultural consumers can join by paying just 10 % of their total unpaid bill.
  • Industrial and non‑domestic users must pay 25 % of what’s owed to sign up.

Customers visit their local distribution centre or sub‑divisional office to register. The centre will decide how much of the surcharge is waived and set up an installment plan if needed. After registering, the rest of the bill can be paid in one lump sum or spread over time using the payment methods accepted by the electricity company.

Two‑phase rollout

  1. Phase 1 (Nov 3 – Dec 31 2025) – Surcharge waivers range from 60 % to 100 %.
  2. Phase 2 (Jan 1 – Feb 28 2026) – Surcharge discounts shift to 50 %–90 %.

The state government estimates it will exclude more than ₹3,000 crore in surcharge costs for nearly nine million consumers during the 2025‑26 period.

Next steps

If you owe the power company for three or more months, check the rules for your user type and visit your nearest sub‑divisional office. Pay the deposit, and your bill may be slashed, bringing you back on track without the burden of hefty extra charges.
