Bengal govt makes it mandatory to sing ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jal’ in government schools Assembly

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) announced on Thursday that every government‑run school in the state must sing the new state anthem, “Banglar Mati, Banglar Jal,” during its morning assembly.

The song, written in 1905 by Nobel‑prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, was officially declared West Bengal’s state anthem in 2023 after a resolution passed in the state assembly.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu explained that, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s permission, all schools will now add this Tagore hymn to the regular singing of the national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana.” Basu said the anthem would “act as a special catalyst for social and communal unity” across the state.

Some observers say the move is aimed at stirring Bengali pride ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. Others note that West Bengal was one of the few Indian states without an official state song until now.

Other Indian states already have anthems: Odisha’s “Vande Utkal Janani” (1936), Andhra Pradesh’s “Maa Telugu Thaliki” (1956), and state anthems in Assam, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

By adding “Banglar Mati, Banglar Jal” to daily school routines, West Bengal joins the growing list of states that use music to strengthen state identity and community spirit.
