Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Pushes for Statehood Restoration
In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a strong call for restoring full statehood to the region. Speaking to the media on Monday, he shared updates on ongoing efforts, including talks with lawyers ahead of the next Supreme Court hearing in October.
Omar Abdullah stressed that his team hasn’t given up on the statehood demand for Jammu and Kashmir. "We’re actively discussing strategies with legal experts to see if we need a fresh approach," he said. The case involves private parties arguing in court right now, but the chief minister remains optimistic about pushing forward.
He expressed gratitude to Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar for backing the cause. "I’m thankful to Sharad Pawar sahab for his recent letter to the Prime Minister, urging the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir as a state," Omar Abdullah noted. He had appealed to leaders during the recent Parliament session for their support. Recalling his Independence Day hopes on August 15, he added, "I was optimistic the Prime Minister would fulfill the promise, but it didn’t happen. We’ll keep fighting."
This push comes years after the major changes in 2019. On August 5 that year, the central government revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and split the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir (with a legislature) and Ladakh (without one). The Supreme Court recently weighed in during a hearing on August 14, 2025, on a plea to restore statehood. The court highlighted the need to consider the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir, including recent events in Pahalgam.
Reviving the Delayed Sawalkote Power Project
Shifting gears, Omar Abdullah also addressed the long-stalled Sawalkote power project in Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out how political hurdles had derailed it, driving up costs and making revival tough. "No one can deny politics ruined the Sawalkote project," he said while speaking in Srinagar. "Prices have skyrocketed, but we’re committed to finishing it."
The chief minister emphasized the project’s huge potential: it could generate over 1,100 megawatts of electricity, giving a big boost to power supply in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Despite the challenges, the government is working hard to get it back on track.
These updates show Omar Abdullah’s focus on key issues like Jammu and Kashmir statehood restoration and development projects amid ongoing legal battles in the Supreme Court.
