Heavy rains have battered several provinces in Laos, sparking widespread flooding and putting more people at risk as river levels keep climbing. Officials are urging folks in low-lying areas to stay alert and move valuables to safer spots.
In central Laos’s Xaysomboun province, authorities rushed to hard-hit spots where severe floods wrecked homes and claimed three lives. Emergency teams and local leaders are on the ground, lending a hand to families in need.
Down south in Savannakhet province, nonstop downpours over the past week soaked 18 villages and ruined 3,165 hectares of rice fields. More than 2,600 families—about 10,000 people—had to flee their homes. Roads, a school, and key irrigation systems took a beating too. Governor Bounchom Oubonpaseuth checked out the damage firsthand, and teams are now handing out emergency supplies while fixing what’s broken.
Laos’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment sounded a flood alert after the Mekong River and its branches swelled from all the rain. Some rivers have already topped warning levels, and in Champasak province’s Pakse district, the Mekong hit 10.93 meters—creeping close to the 11-meter danger mark.
The national weather bureau warns of even higher chances for flash floods, with more rain on the way. They’re telling residents near rivers and streams to head to higher ground right away.
This mess builds on last week’s chaos from Typhoon Kajiki, which slammed Laos from August 25 to 31 with fierce storms, pounding rain, and gusty winds. That storm kicked off flash floods that trashed houses, roads, and farms across the country, and experts say the risks haven’t let up yet.
In another central spot, Khammuan province, downpours flooded eight villages. Local officials and disaster crews jumped into action, clearing clogged drains and debris to get water moving again and ease the flooding.
