Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025 in Greater Noida on Thursday, spotlighting India’s push for self-reliance in defence and praising the state’s growing role in homegrown production.
Modi told the crowd that India’s armed forces are determined to cut reliance on foreign suppliers. “Our armed forces aspire to achieve self-reliance and minimize dependence on external sources,” he said. “We’re building a strong defence infrastructure right here in India, with every part proudly Made in India.” To make it happen, the government is creating a supportive ecosystem, and Uttar Pradesh stands out as a key player.
He shared exciting updates on defence manufacturing. Production of AK-203 rifles will start soon at a new factory built with help from Russia. Plus, a Defence Corridor in Uttar Pradesh is already buzzing—it’s where BrahMos missiles and other weapon systems are being made.
The trade show, running from September 25 to 29 under the theme “Ultimate Sourcing Begins Here,” focuses on innovation, integration, and internationalization. Organizers are drawing in international buyers, domestic business-to-business deals, and even business-to-consumer shoppers. It puts Uttar Pradesh’s rich craft traditions, modern industries, strong small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and up-and-coming entrepreneurs all in one spot, giving exporters and small businesses a big boost.
Modi also touted the wins from GST reforms, saying everyday families are saving big each month. He fired back at Congress for attacking the changes, calling their criticism a way to cover up failures before 2014. “We’ve boosted incomes and savings for India’s people,” he added. “We’re not stopping—we’ll keep strengthening the economy and cutting taxes. GST reforms will continue nonstop.”
Congress hit back, pointing out that Modi opposed the GST model as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Party leader Jairam Ramesh noted earlier: “From 2006-2014, only one CM opposed GST—and that CM became Prime Minister in 2014, did a U-turn, and became GST’s biggest champion by 2017.”
The BJP dismissed the claims, saying the Congress era was full of empty promises and no real progress. They accused the opposition of spreading lies now to dodge their past record.
