Senior social worker Baba Adhav passes away; PM Modi expresses grief

New Delhi/Pune – The 95‑year‑old veteran social worker Baba Adhav died in Pune late on Monday after a prolonged bout of illness, according to people close to his family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: "Baba Adhav Ji will be remembered for his efforts to serve society through various causes, notably empowering the marginalised and furthering labour welfare. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
Adhav, who spent more than sixty years fighting for the rights of downtrodden workers, is survived by his sons, Asim and Amber. His private‑hospital treatment began about two weeks ago when his health suddenly deteriorated. Even after receiving intensive medical support, he succumbed around 8:25 p.m. following a cardiac arrest.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also shared his condolences. In a Marathi post on X, he wrote: "The news of the demise of senior social worker Baba Adhav is deeply saddening. He consistently fought for the rights of the deprived and unorganised sections of society, working as a pillar of support for them." He added that “Baba Adhav built organisations to secure justice for porters, rickshaw drivers, and construction workers”.
Fadnavis also noted some of his key initiatives, such as the Hamal Panchayat and the One Village‑One Water Source movement, and said that “the struggle he waged against social evils will always be remembered. Maharashtra has always been blessed with a great tradition of social reformers, and today we have lost one of the most distinguished personalities of that tradition.”
“The legacy of Baba Adhav will live on; his vision will continue to inspire future generations,” the CM concluded, offering his heartfelt tributes and sharing the sorrow of his family and supporters.
