Weather department predicts rain across TN till September 26

Rain continues to drench Tamil Nadu, with the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai predicting widespread showers across the state, Puducherry, and Karaikal through September 26. This follows a wet 24 hours where several spots saw heavy downpours, boosting the ongoing southwest monsoon season.

In the last day, Arakkonam in Ranipet district topped the charts with 7 cm of rain. Nearby, Ambattur in Tiruvallur district and Chennai’s Ayyappakkam and Korattur each got 6 cm. Northern districts took the brunt of moderate to heavy rain, while some southern areas joined in.

Experts point to a low-level atmospheric circulation over southern Tamil Nadu as the main driver. This setup will stick around for the next five days, delivering bursts of rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to both north and south regions. Puducherry and Karaikal face the same soggy forecast.

For Chennai residents, expect light to moderate showers, plus thunder and lightning in spots. Commuters, watch out—sudden rains could snarl traffic in low-lying areas, so plan your trips wisely.

Since the southwest monsoon kicked off on June 1, Tamil Nadu has collected about 30 cm of rain—5% above the long-term average. Weather scientists call it a normal season with a slight positive tilt, keeping things steady so far.

Eyes are on the Bay of Bengal now, where a fresh low-pressure area might brew near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast by September 25. If it strengthens, it could amp up the Tamil Nadu rain forecast even more.

The downpours are hitting schools, offices, and farms hard, so officials urge everyone to check weather updates and stay prepared. Fishermen, steer clear of risky sea ventures during this stretch.
