Sri Lankan Navy detains 30 TN fishermen; seizes four trawlers

In Chennai on Oct. 9, the Sri Lankan Navy seized four trawlers and detained 30 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing into international waters off Palk Bay. The boats were part of a routine deep‑sea run that began that morning after fishers were issued fishing permits at Rameswaram jetty.

The navy’s patrol team spotted the group near the maritime boundary line that separates India and Sri Lanka. They boarded the vessels, took the fishermen and the catch into custody, and moved them to a naval base in northern Sri Lanka for questioning. The incident was reported to Indian authorities late that night.

The Rameswaram fishing community has reacted strongly. Local fishermen’s leaders, including Jesu Raja, called on the Union government to step in diplomatically and secure the fishermen’s release. “It’s not just a boundary issue—it threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of families,” he said.

Sagayam, another fishing community spokesman, added that the arrests dampened the festive spirit as Deepavali approaches. “Women and children are in distress. We need swift action from both state and central governments to bring our people and boats back,” he urged.

The event follows a pattern of periodic arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities in Palk Bay. The ongoing fishing rights dispute between the two countries continues to strain relations, despite diplomatic talks aimed at finding a lasting solution.

The detention raises fresh concerns about maritime security, fishing rights, and the livelihoods that depend on the waters between India and Sri Lanka. As both sides urge a prompt resolution, the fishing community remains anxious for their return to the sea.
