In De C, Nov 9 – The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Uttarakhand’s state government just inked a Memorandum of Understanding to take over Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh. The deal was signed in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the state’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.
With AAI on board, the airport will get a full upgrade. New runways, upgraded terminals, and better safety equipment are on the agenda. The plans aim to give travelers a smooth, reliable flight experience to the rugged Himalayan region.
Officials say the move will boost Uttarakhand’s economy in many ways. Improved air links will help tourism, pilgrimage trips, trade, and even local businesses. The airport’s 70‑acres site can handle 40 passengers at peak times and two Code 2B aircraft on the apron, so it’s already ready for growth.
“This acquisition will modernize the airport and strengthen the state’s regional connectivity,” the state government said. “Naini Saini will become a catalyst for Uttarakhand’s culture, tourism sector, and local employment.”
The upgrade also supports Prime Minister Modi’s vision of accessible, sustainable aviation infrastructure across the country. A stronger airport network will aid disaster response in the fragile Himalayan zone, according to the government.
Overall, the AAI‑Uttarakhand partnership marks a key step in turning the state’s remote regions into thriving hubs of travel and trade.
