Kylie Toberman, a 14-year-old wrestler from Vandalia, Illinois, was reported missing on Friday morning at about 6:30 a.m. Her body was found the same afternoon in an RV behind her home, according to KDSK news.
The tragedy has stunned the local community and the Vandal Wrestling Takedown Club, which lost a promising athlete. “We lost one of our wrestlers, Kylie Toberman,” the club wrote on Facebook. “Our team and community are grieving the loss of such a sweet and bright young girl.”
Kylie’s mother, Megan Zeller, confirmed the death on Facebook and posted a heartfelt tribute. “My baby was sooo BEAUTIFUL, intelligent & caring,” she wrote. She has slammed the Department of Children and Family Services for not allowing her to see her daughter and her other two daughters, adding she will keep speaking up until justice is served.
Police have charged Arnold B. Rivera, 43, with first‑degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault and concealing a homicidal death. Rivera has a long record. In 2000 he faced burglary and child sexual abuse charges that were dropped for a plea deal. He served 30 months for aggravated battery in 2002, was back in court in 2008, pleaded guilty to vehicle theft, and received 24 months probation. He is being held without bond at Fayette County Jail and will be arraigned Monday morning at the Fayette County Courthouse.
The case raises questions about the girl’s living situation. Zeller mentioned that Kylie may have been in the care of a relative who shares Rivera’s last name, but it’s unclear if they are related.
The investigation into Kylie’s murder continues as authorities seek to bring an end to this heartbreaking story. For updates, follow local news outlets and the Vandal Wrestling Takedown Club’s Facebook page.
