Hyderabad, Oct 13 – The city’s police have launched SafeRideChallenge, a social‑media push to make road safety the next big trend. Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar asked drivers to film or snap a quick photo of themselves sporting a helmet or fastening their seat‑belt, then tag three friends or family members to do the same.
“Safety never goes out of style,” Sajjanar told commuters. “Every ride starts with a choice to protect yourself and those you love.” The challenge is designed to spread fast across platforms, giving young people and everyday drivers a simple way to show they care about safety.
The campaign spotlights three key actions before every trip: seat‑belt up, helmet on (for riders), and a call for everyone to inspire others. By turning a small act into a viral moment, the police aim to embed a culture of accountability on Hyderabad’s roads.
Sajjanar also warned that using a mobile phone while driving is illegal. “Many drivers—auto‑rickshaw and taxi drivers in particular—are caught watching videos or listening to music while on the road,” he said on X. “It is dangerous and punishable. No distraction is worth a life.”
Earlier this month, the new commissioner described drunk drivers as “road terrorists,” emphasizing that alcohol‑impaired driving casts a deadly threat on everyone. “When you drive under the influence, you don’t know whether you’ll kill one, two, or more people on the road,” he warned.
Hyderabad Police are increasingly turning to digital tools to reach citizens. With SafeRideChallenge, they hope to keep safety compliance visible, encourage positive habits, and make every ride safer for the community.
