Visiting Australia to strengthen defence ties and mark 5 years of strategic partnership: Rajnath Singh

India’s defence minister, Rajnath Singh, is heading to Australia on a two‑day official visit that is set to boost bilateral security ties and celebrate five years of the India‑Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). The trip is by invitation of Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, who last visited India in June.

During the visit, Singh will meet his Australian counterpart for high‑level talks that will cover key strategic and security areas. He will chair a business roundtable in Sydney with industry leaders from both sides and call on Australian national leaders to explore new cooperation ideas. The agenda includes signing three new agreements aimed at expanding information sharing, maritime domain cooperation and joint defence activities.

This is the first time a defence minister from India’s current government has visited Australia under the CSP since 2014. The meeting will deepen a partnership that began as a Strategic Partnership in 2009 and was upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020. Both countries share common values of democratic governance, Commonwealth ties, and growing economic links, and they have worked together on a wide range of military‑to‑military exchanges, joint exercises, and capacity‑building programmes.

India and Australia continue to strengthen people‑to‑people connections—through students, tourism and sports—while expanding defence engagement from ship visits to broader maritime security cooperation. Singh’s visit marks an important moment for the India‑Australia partnership and signals a sharp focus on deeper defence collaboration in the Indo‑Pacific region.
