Three transgender people lost their lives in a shocking shooting near Memon Goth police station in Karachi, Pakistan, on September 22. Officials told The Express Tribune that the victims died from single gunshot wounds—two to the chest and one to the head.
Police, Rangers, and rescue teams quickly sealed off the area after getting reports of the attack. A crime scene unit arrived to gather evidence, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir, Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, checked out the site himself. He shared with reporters that investigators found no IDs or phones on the bodies at first, but they did recover two 9mm pistol shells, a torch, a tissue roll, and other items nearby.
To identify the victims, police took fingerprints and started questioning local residents. While no cameras directly watched the spot, officers are reviewing footage from close by to hunt for clues. Early signs point to the shootings happening right there—two bodies lay side by side, and the third was just a few feet away, as if that person tried to run.
SSP Pirzada said the victims seemed to hang out in the area often, based on what they found. Police will test the bullet casings to see if one gun or more was involved. The bodies went to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsies.
Later reports named the victims as 20-year-old Alex Riyasat, also known as Aini, from Sheikhupura; 28-year-old Muhammad Jeel, known as Sameera, from Khairpur; and Asma, whose full details are still unclear.
The Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) strongly condemned the transgender killings in Karachi, saying the victims lived around Bilawal Goth and Safora Town and made a living by begging. “This isn’t just about three murders—it’s an attack to scare and silence the whole transgender community,” the group stated. They demanded a clear investigation, quick arrests, and a special protection team for transgender people in Pakistan.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah jumped in too, ordering the Inspector General of Police to catch the killers right away. “We must arrest those behind these transgender murders at any cost,” he said, calling the victims part of an oppressed group. He stressed that the state won’t stand for violence against any innocent people.
