Adorable newborn sloth, named Beanie’s Baby, makes its public debut at PA zoo

A tiny sloth has just joined the family at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The baby, named Beanie’s Baby, arrived on Wednesday and is only two pounds—no bigger than a small bag of chips.

The two‑toed sloth’s mother, Beanie, was caught up in a rare relocation. She was living at Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo when she became pregnant. Zoo staff moved her to Elmwood Park midway through her pregnancy, a timing that gives a new keeper and her unborn baby time to settle before delivery.

“Beanie was already pregnant when she came to us,” the zoo explained on Instagram. “We carefully monitored her through the remainder of her pregnancy.” The move also gives the new sloth a steady home away from the hectic rhythm of the original park.

Many people wonder about the baby’s gender, but sloths don’t show obvious differences between males and females. DNA testing—needed after the baby stays with its mother for about five months—will finally tell which it is.

Elmwood Park Zoo has opened its doors to a new, fluffy visitor who’s sure to capture the hearts of families and animal lovers alike. Mark the squirrels‑free stretch of October with a quick stop to see Beanie’s Baby climb out, cuddle, and slowly explore its lush enclosure.
