Jaipur, Oct 6 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his condolences after a deadly fire tore through the ICU ward of Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Eight people lost their lives when flames broke out early Monday morning.
The blaze started in the neuro‑ICU area, and smoke poured across the floor in minutes, sparking panic among patients, families and staff. Hospital officials said that many documents, ICU equipment, blood sample tubes and other supplies were destroyed. Firefighters were called in within minutes and fought the fire for about two hours. They had to break a window to bring the blaze under control.
Hospital chief Jagdish Modi explained that a short‑circuit sparked the fire. He praised the doctors and nurses who quickly moved patients out of the ward, even while the smoke filled the air. “We tried our best to calm everyone and shift the patients to nearby rooms,” Modi told .
Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph confirmed that the fire was completely out, but the neuro‑ICU ward was heavily damaged, with a collapsed ceiling. He said a forensic report would determine the exact cause.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel and Home Minister‑in‑charge Jawahar Singh Bedham also visited the site to assess the damage and reassure the public that all possible help would be provided.
The incident highlights the need for stronger safety protocols in healthcare facilities. Emergency teams and hospital staff worked hard to protect patients, but the tragedy underscores how quickly a fire can become deadly. The Indian government urged a full investigation to prevent future incidents.
