The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has pushed back the cutoff for new applications to recruit non‑teaching staff in its Group‑C and Group‑D categories for state schools. Instead of December 3, applicants now have until December 8 to submit their paperwork.
This round of hiring is meant to replace the jobs that were wiped out last year when the Supreme Court struck down the whole 2016 panel, which comprised roughly 26,000 teaching and non‑teaching positions.
The deadline extension followed two rapid movements in the Calcutta High Court. First, a petition was filed with a single‑judge bench headed by Justice Amrita Sinha, contesting the fresh recruitment process for the two non‑teaching groups. The judge accepted the case and scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, on an emergency basis, because the original last day for applications was still December 3.
Within an hour of setting the hearing, Justice Sinha ordered the WBSSC to disclose the complete list of 7,293 “tainted” non‑teaching staff from the 2016 panel—those who had been hired through bribery. The commission had previously published only 3,512 names, sparking allegations that the list was incomplete. The court stressed that showing the full roster was crucial for determining the outcome of the petition that questions the new hiring scheme.
