In Chandigarh, Punjab police began a fresh round of action on Thursday after a spike in reports of hateful posts on social media aimed at the Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai. The crackdown saw the filing of multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) in several districts, targeting over a hundred online accounts that shared or promoted content that the police described as “caste‑based hate and incitement.”
The police said the posts attacked a key constitutional figure, used caste slurs, and encouraged division. “These messages were designed to stir violence and erode respect for the judiciary,” the spokesperson explained. The content also contained direct insults toward members of a Scheduled Caste and attempts to create conflict between groups on caste lines.
Under India’s Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 and sections of the British Nyaya Sanhita, the police have registered the case as a cognizable offence. They are working to identify the individuals behind the hate‑filled accounts and to stop further spread of the material.
The Punjab Police said it is keeping a close eye on online platforms, stressing that freedom of expression can’t be used to spread hatred or destabilise public order. Investigations are continuing under the law. ()
