Violence intensifies in Sudan’s North Darfur: UN

United Nations agencies say violence is worsening in Sudan’s North Darfur state, especially after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized El Fasher, the region’s capital.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported multiple air and drone strikes on Sunday over El Fasher, Tina, and Wana Mountain. Local witnesses say civilians were hit, but OCHA cannot confirm the exact numbers because access is limited and communication with residents is difficult.

The situation became even more tragic on Monday when the Kernoi Pediatric and Maternity Hospital in North Darfur was struck. The World Health Organization’s chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, condemned the attack and called for an end to all assaults on healthcare facilities across Sudan. At least four people died and three were injured.

Despite the dangerous environment, UN relief teams are still delivering life‑saving aid where they can. OCHA said the organization is boosting therapeutic feeding and vitamin‑supplement programs and is setting up mobile clinics to give pregnant women safe deliveries and emergency care.

The security crisis isn’t limited to North Darfur. In the Kordofan region, reports from El Obeid, the North Kordofan capital, show a Sunday attack on a funeral that killed at least 40 civilians and injured many others. Xinhua reports confirm the toll.

OCHA urges an immediate halt to hostilities and stresses that all parties must protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law. The UN Security Council, on October 30, voiced deep concern over the fighting around El Fasher. It condemned the RSF’s assault, cited atrocities—including summary executions and arbitrary detentions—and warned of the risk of large‑scale ethnic violence.

The Council demands accountability for perpetrators, insists on full protection for civilians, and calls for unhindered humanitarian access so aid can reach those most in need.
