Nafisa Ali begins ‘new chapter’ as she resumes chemotherapy after as ‘surgery is not possible’

Veteran actress and politician Nafisa Ali is facing her cancer battle with incredible strength. On Tuesday, the 66-year-old shared a heartfelt update on Instagram about resuming chemotherapy, as surgery isn’t possible right now. Diagnosed with stage 3 peritoneal and ovarian cancer in 2018, Nafisa loves life and isn’t backing down from this new chapter in her health journey.

In her emotional post, Nafisa shared a touching quote about family bonds. It reads: “One day my children asked, ‘Who will we turn to when you’re gone?’ I told them, ‘Turn to each other. That is my greatest gift – siblings who share the same love and memories. Protect one another, and remember: your bond is stronger than anything life can bring’.” She captioned it: “A new chapter in my journey from today. I had my PET scan yesterday … so back to chemotherapy as surgery is not possible. Believe me I love life.”

Nafisa Ali’s inspiring story goes way beyond her health update. She started as a sports star, winning national swimming championships from 1972 to 1974. In 1976, she grabbed the Eve’s Weekly Miss India title and became the second runner-up at the Miss International pageant, representing India proudly.

Her Bollywood career kicked off in 1979 with the hit film Junoon, directed by Shyam Benegal and starring Shashi Kapoor. Fans loved her in movies like Major Saab with Amitabh Bachchan, Bewafaa, Life in a… Metro, Guzaarish, and Yamla Pagla Deewana. She even shone in the Malayalam film Big B alongside Mammootty. Her latest role was in the 2022 emotional drama Uunchai, directed by Sooraj Barjatya, featuring a stellar cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parineeti Chopra, Neena Gupta, Sarika, and Danny Denzongpa.

Politics has been a big part of Nafisa Ali’s life too. In 2004, she ran for Lok Sabha from South Kolkata but didn’t win. In 2009, she contested from Lucknow on a Samajwadi Party ticket after Sanjay Dutt’s disqualification. She rejoined the Indian National Congress that year, calling it a lifelong commitment. Later, in October 2021, she switched to the All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2022 Goa Assembly elections.

Nafisa’s courage in sharing her ovarian cancer journey and peritoneal cancer fight continues to inspire many. Her message of family love and resilience reminds us all why she remains a beloved figure in Indian cinema and politics. Stay strong, Nafisa!
