Suspect ID’d in Kentucky State University shooting that killed one student, injured another
A man from Evansville, Indiana was arrested for shooting two students at Kentucky State University, killing one of them. Frankfort police identified the suspect as 48‑year‑old Jacob Lee Bard and charged him with murder and first‑degree assault. Bard is not a student at the university, and authorities have yet to reveal why he acted.
Police in Frankfort responded to the shooting around 3:10 p.m. after receiving reports at the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall. They arrived shortly after and found that campus police had already taken Bard into custody. Video footage showed police vehicles and crime‑scene tape surrounding a cluster of dormitories.
The victims were university students; one has died at a hospital and the other remains critically ill. The university has not yet announced the victims’ names. In a statement, the school said it is closely supporting the families and is offering counseling and other resources.
Governor Andy Beshear posted a message on X, saying the incident “appears to be an isolated incident” and that “there is no ongoing threat.” He urged people to pray for the affected families and for a future without violence.
University President Koffi C. Akakpo called the event a “senseless tragedy.” He expressed deep sorrow during a press conference, noting how difficult it is to imagine as a parent receiving the call today.
In response to the shooting, the university canceled all classes, final exams, and campus activities for the rest of the week, even though the fall term was set to finish on Friday. Students are allowed to go home if they wish, and the school will provide further instructions as soon as possible.
