MJ Akbar tears into Pakistan, calls it a “corrupt military dictatorship”

Former Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar has slammed Pakistan as a corrupt military regime that relies on supremacism and fascism. In an interview with on October 11, Akbar said the unrest in Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir shows how the people on both sides of the line are finally seeing the truth.

He argued that Kashmir’s populations were misled by the idea that religion, especially Islam, could form the basis of a nation. “Islam belongs in a mosque, not in a country,” Akbar said. He added that Pakistan’s credibility has always been weak and is now beginning to crumble because its leaders have built a state on forces of supremacism rather than on the needs of its people.

The former minister warned that Pakistan’s recent attacks on Afghanistan could signal deeper internal collapse. “This could be the start of Pakistan’s fragmentation,” he said, pointing out long‑standing demands for independence from regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the ongoing insurgency in Balochistan.

Akbar also linked Pakistan’s political instability to its handling of dissent and foreign alliances. He questioned why China hasn’t mined the country’s rare‑earth deposits, suggesting that the situation is too dangerous for the world to engage.

The comments come amid continuing protests across Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir, as residents demand greater rights and an end to what they view as an oppressive military‑run administration. The debate over religion in politics and the potential for further divisions remains at the forefront of Pakistan’s political conversation.
