UP: Sugar mill officials in soup over outstanding dues to cane farmers, case lodged

In a strong step to protect farmers’ rights, Uttar Pradesh Police have taken action against Yadu Sugar Mill for failing to pay farmers their dues. The police have registered cases against five top officials of the mill, including the director, Kunal Yadav, who is the son of former Parliamentarian DP Yadav. The total unpaid amount to farmers is nearly Rs 30 crore.

The cases were filed after repeated warnings and reminders from authorities went unheeded. The officials accused include Suraj Yadav, the managing director, Suresh Chandra Johri, the nominee, and other senior managers. Police say they failed to pay sugarcane farmers within the legal deadline, despite crushing sugarcane worth over Rs 150 crore across two mills located in Nevli (Kasganj) and Bisouli (Badaun).

According to reports, the Bisouli mill owed farmers Rs 30.92 crore, while Nevli mill owed around Rs 18 crore. Both mills had purchased sugarcane but paid only about 67% of the dues, leaving farmers waiting for their full payment. Despite multiple notices from authorities, the remaining dues have not been cleared.

District officials warn that if the mill owners do not settle the outstanding payments soon, arrests could be made. The police are currently interrogating the accused officials and are promising strict action based on their investigation.

This move highlights the government’s effort to ensure farmers get their rightful payments and stop exploitation by mills. Farmers and citizens are closely watching how this case unfolds, hoping for justice and better regulation in the sugar industry.
