“Centre ensured that rising fertiliser prices did not burden farmers,” says Shivraj Singh Chouhan

New Delhi – Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told farmers and officials that the Modi government has kept fertilizer costs low for Indian farmers, even as global prices surged.

At a ceremony in Pusa, the minister said one bag of urea is still cheap at Rs 266 and DAP (di‑ammonium phosphate) at Rs 1,350, thanks to big‑ticket subsidies. He added that cutting GST on farm machinery makes modern equipment more affordable.

Chouhan highlighted hikes in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for key crops: wheat now gets Rs 160 more per quintal, gram rises by Rs 200 or more, lentils by Rs 300, mustard by Rs 250 and sunflower by Rs 600.

Under the PM‑Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, farmers have received Rs 3.90 lakh crore straight to their bank accounts. The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) has supplied more than Rs 10 lakh crore in loans for FY 2024‑25, with an interest‑subsidy of Rs 1.62 lakh crore. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana paid over Rs 1.83 lakh crore in insurance payouts.

The minister praised the rise of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). Over 5.2 million farmers are now shareholders in more than 1,100 FPOs that together turned over more than Rs 15,000 crore. The Agriculture Ministry is boosting innovation, branding and market linkages for these groups.

“India’s agriculture is reaching global standards,” Chouhan said, urging citizens to embrace Swadeshi and contribute to a self‑reliant, developed India. He praised Prime Minister Modi’s vision and highlighted the PM‑Dhan‑Dhaanya Krishi Yojana – a 36‑sub‑scheme plan across 11 ministries – and the new Self‑Reliance in Pulses Mission aimed at making India independent in pulse production.

The event also marked the birth anniversaries of social reformers Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan and Nanaji Deshmukh, and included a direct conversation between Chief Minister Modi and groups of pulse growers, animal‑herd farmers and fishermen about their challenges and innovations.
