Jaishankar meets UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, other leaders at UNGA

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrapped up a busy day of diplomacy at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. He held key meetings with global leaders, tackling everything from strengthening partnerships to hot global issues like the Middle East and geopolitical trends.

Jaishankar kicked off his sideline talks by meeting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The two discussed the UN’s 80th anniversary, shifting world dynamics, ongoing hotspots, and India’s take on these challenges. “Pleased to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today in New York,” Jaishankar posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We covered UN@80, geopolitical trends, current hotspots, and India’s perspectives.”

He also connected with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to boost India-Algeria ties. Their chat focused on deepening their partnership and sharing thoughts on the volatile Middle East situation. Jaishankar shared the moment on social media: “Good to meet FM Ahmed Attaf of Algeria. Discussed strengthening our partnership and exchanged views on the Middle East.”

Talks with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, rounded out the bilateral meetings. They exchanged ideas on India-Saudi cooperation and broader regional developments. “Met with FM Prince Faisal bin Farhan of Saudi Arabia at UNGA,” Jaishankar noted on X. “Exchanged views on our bilateral cooperation and the regional situation.”

Jaishankar wrapped up by meeting UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock. He pledged India’s full backing for her leadership and highlighted efforts to modernize the UN. “Delighted to meet UN PGA Annalena Baerbock today,” he wrote. “Assured her of India’s full support for her Presidency. India will continue its work with the UN to make it more relevant and reflective of our times.”

Earlier that day, Jaishankar took the stage at the UNGA session to outline India’s worldview. He emphasized three guiding principles for Bharat—self-reliance (Atmanirbharta), self-protection (Atmaraksha), and self-confidence (Atmavishwas). “Bharat will always maintain its freedom of choice,” he said. “And will always be a voice for the Global South.” He stressed zero tolerance for terrorism, strong border defenses, and support for Indians abroad, underscoring India’s role in a changing global order.
