Actress Elizabeth Berkley opened up about the wave of criticism she faced after the 1995 film Showgirls, according to a report by People.
The movie, directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, starred an ensemble cast that included Kyle MacLachlan, Gina Gershon, Glenn Plummer, Robert Davi, Alan Rachins, and Gina Ravera. Berkley played the lead role of Nomi Malone.
Nearly 30 years after the film’s release, Berkley addressed fans during the 30th‑anniversary screening in Austin, Texas. She talked openly about the backlash she experienced. “I took a beating,” she said, “It was not fun for a little while. I was isolated. I felt abandoned by the very people I collaborated with.” She added, “I’m not a victim. I’ve never been one, and I never will be.” Berkley praised fans for their support, saying their love helped her stand strong against negative media and industry criticism.
Despite the film’s poor initial reviews and lackluster box office results, Berkley’s former Saved by the Bell co‑stars have been a solid source of encouragement. “We’re like siblings,” she explained. “When I got the role, they were happy for me. We all wanted to branch out.” The camaraderie has stayed, she said, highlighting the importance of a supportive network during difficult times.
Berkley revealed how she landed the role. While reading Variety, she discovered they needed a dancer who could act—a perfect fit for the character of Nomi. She was ecstatic when she learned Paul Verhoeven would direct the project. “I stopped at nothing to get this role,” she said. “Representatives told me it wouldn’t happen. They said it would take a big name, not me.” She urged listeners to keep pursuing their dreams: “Whatever you’re aiming for, don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible.”
In an interview in 2020, Berkley discussed how playing Nomi shaped her personal life. “It was a life‑changing moment,” she said. “I would be a different person if I hadn’t gone through what it taught me.” She reflected on the criticism she received at the time. “I was bullied. I didn’t understand why I was being blamed,” she said. “I did everything I was supposed to do.”
Berkley’s story is a reminder that fame can bring backlash, but it can also open doors and forge deep friendships. She continues to speak openly about her experience, encouraging others to stand resilient in the face of hate. For those who still dream of a breakthrough, Berkley’s message is clear: it’s never too late to prove yourself.
