IOC President Kirsty Coventry Shares Heartwarming Memories of Her Olympic Journey Starting from Sydney 2000
Twenty-five years after her first Olympic Games, IOC President Kirsty Coventry looks back at her incredible journey that began in Sydney. At just 16, she stepped onto the pool deck full of excitement and nerves, ready to chase her dreams.
"I was wide-eyed and nervous, with no clue what to expect," Coventry shared in an IOC statement, marking the 25th anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. She recalled spotting swimming legend Susie O’Neill warming up and whispering to her coach in awe. Her coach’s simple words stuck with her: "I see another girl, just like you." That moment made her feel right at home in the Olympic world.
Though she didn’t make it to the finals in Sydney, the experience lit a fire under her. Coventry went on to shine brightly, grabbing three medals—one gold, one silver, and one bronze—at the Athens 2004 Olympics. She added two more—a gold and a silver—in Beijing 2008, cementing her place as a swimming star.
"Sydney wasn’t just my debut; it sparked everything," she said. Coventry celebrated her 17th birthday during the races, met boxing icon Muhammad Ali in the Olympic Village, and even discovered her love for Aussie lamingtons. But above all, she felt the true magic of the Olympic spirit.
IOC’s Head of Olympic Games Impact and Legacy, Arram Kim, also praised Sydney 2000 for bringing Australians together. "It created a sense of unity that went way beyond sports," Kim noted. "The whole country shared in the pride, and that memory lives on."
Coventry believes the Sydney Olympics legacy still inspires Australia as it gears up for Brisbane 2032. "Sydney set the stage for my successes in Athens, Beijing, London, and Rio," she explained. Now, as IOC President, it shapes her vision for the future Games. "I know the huge impact Olympics can have on young athletes, communities, and entire generations. Sydney started my story—Brisbane will write a fresh chapter. And out there, some young girl is dreaming big, ready to create her own Olympic legacy."
