Two held in Amritsar for murder of Italy-based resident; weapons seized

Chandigarh, Nov 8 – Punjab Police made two major arrests last week after a shooting that killed Malkit Singh, an Italian‑resident farmer, in Amritsar. Police recovered a cache of high‑tech weapons that could have sparked larger attacks.

The men taken into custody are Bikramjit Singh, known as “Bikram,” and Karanbir Singh. They were found with a foreign‑made .30‑caliber PX5 pistol, a .30‑caliber sidearm, a .45‑caliber pistol, a .32‑caliber pistol, a revolver and 20 rounds of ammunition. The weapons were seized from their vehicles in Amritsar’s rural zone.

Malkit Singh was hit by gunfire while sowing wheat in Dhariwal village on November 1. He later died from his wounds at a local hospital. Police say the shooting is linked to the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), a banned militant group. Bikramjit has a history with terrorism; he was involved in the 2018 grenade attack on a religious site at Raja Sansi.

“Investigations show that, under orders from foreign handlers, Bikramjit procured illegal arms across the border,” DGP Gaurav Yadav told reporters. The arrest was part of a coordinated operation by the Amritsar Rural police unit under SSP Maninder Singh, with DIG Sandeep Goel, Border Range, overseeing the raid.

This action ends a swath of KLF‑related crimes in the state. Earlier, on October 31, the police arrested three members of the banned Sikh for Justice (SFJ) after pro‑Khalistan slogans appeared on school walls in Punjab. SFJ is linked to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual U.S. and Canadian national the Indian government has labelled a terrorist. The culprits – Navjot Singh (24), Gurpreet Singh (26) and Harjinder Singh – were found with four mobile phones and a dongle device. Their slogans, painted on two school walls on the night of Oct. 19‑20, incite public unrest and were backed by foreign funding.

Punjab Police’s recent operations aim to keep militant activity under control and protect communities from extremist threats.
