Kolkata, Dec 1 – On Monday, the Calcutta High Court’s single‑judge bench, led by Justice Amrita Sinha, questioned whether teachers whose experience is limited to the secondary level can receive the extra 10‑mark benefit that is normally given when selecting higher‑secondary teachers.
Justice Sinha heard a petition that pointed out serious irregularities in the new hiring drive for higher‑secondary teachers at state‑run schools in West Bengal. In the course of the hearing, she raised doubts about whether the extra weightage for experience should apply to those teachers.
The current recruitment aims to fill gaps in the state schools after a Supreme Court division bench annulled the entire 2016 WBSSC panel of roughly 26,000 teaching posts in April. The court ordered that only “untainted” teachers could join the 2025 recruitment, while “tainted” teachers—those proven to have secured positions through bribes—must not be allowed to participate.
Consequently, the WBSSC held separate written exams for secondary and higher‑secondary teachers in September, and the results of both were recently announced.
Soon after the interview‑eligible lists for the higher‑secondary posts were released, a petition was filed before Justice Sinha claiming that some “tainted” teachers from the 2016 panel had passed the interview stage. The petitioner argued that letting those teachers in contradicted the Supreme Court’s April ruling.
During the hearing on Monday, Justice Sinha challenged the logic behind permitting teachers whose experience is confined to secondary schools to claim the additional experience points for higher‑secondary selection. She also asked how teachers who have only taught in primary or upper‑primary grades could qualify for recruitment to secondary and higher‑secondary positions.
