In a video shared on Instagram, Oldman opened up about the experience. “When it was time to approach, it was hard to find my voice,” he said. “I was very moved by it. You think the Oscar is a big deal, and then you come here.” The veteran star, known for roles in movies like The Fifth Element and Darkest Hour, admitted this knighthood tops even his Academy Award.
Oldman credits his success to sheer luck rather than careful planning. “I’m fortunate to do what I do—it’s the greatest job in the world,” he told reporters. He started with about 10 years in theater, moved to TV films, and then “got kidnapped by the movies.” Everything felt like an accident, he said, and any recognition is just a bonus.
During the event, Prince William shared that he’s a big fan of Oldman’s work. The royal mentioned enjoying The Fifth Element and Oldman’s portrayal of Churchill in Darkest Hour. Oldman later told ITV that William seemed thrilled to present the honor himself.
The London-born actor felt deeply touched by it all. “I think I feel very honored, very humbled, and flattered in equal measure,” he said. Compared to nothing else, this moment outshines his Oscar—no disrespect to the Academy, but the knighthood feels truly special.
