Congress leader Rahul Gandhi cheered on Indian two-wheeler giants Bajaj, Hero, and TVS for their impressive success in Colombia. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he highlighted how their achievements show that innovation beats cronyism every time. “Proud to see Bajaj, Hero & TVS do so well in Colombia,” Gandhi wrote. “Shows Indian companies can win with innovation, not cronyism. Great job.”
Gandhi shared this message while on his international tour, connecting with the Indian diaspora, students, and academics across Latin America. He’s currently in Colombia and plans to visit more countries in the region as part of his outreach efforts.
The praise came right after an engaging session with students at EIA University in Medellín on Thursday. There, Gandhi opened up about his worries over India’s democracy under the current government. He argued that key institutions are getting weaker and more centralized, mainly to benefit a small group of powerful players.
Still, Gandhi stayed upbeat about India’s future. “I’m very optimistic about India because of its cultural diversity, technological strength, and healthcare system,” he told the students. But he warned that the country risks big problems if its democratic foundations keep crumbling.
Gandhi made it clear India can’t copy China’s authoritarian style. “We can’t do what China does, which is suppress people and run an authoritarian system,” he said. “Our design will just not accept that.”
He also slammed the BJP government’s 2016 demonetisation policy as a total flop. “They demonetised currency with the idea that they’d get rid of cash. Doesn’t work. As a policy, it was a failure,” Gandhi explained.
When it comes to corruption, Gandhi pushed for spreading power more evenly across the country. He accused the current setup of fueling massive, centralized corruption, where just a few big businesses dominate the economy with close ties to the Prime Minister. “In India, we have a huge amount of corruption now at a very, very centralised level,” he claimed. “Three-four businesses are taking over the whole economy, having a direct relationship with PM. Corruption is rampant in India (now).”
