In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, a talented designer named Akshita Sharma made headlines on Saturday by gifting a stunning artwork to Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Fresh from her National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Delhi graduation in 2016, Akshita drew inspiration from the rugged, mud-washed walls of Lahaul and Spiti valleys. Her creation mixes earthy tones with the sparkle of agate and jasper stones—gems long used in traditional Himalayan jewellery.
These stones aren’t just pretty; they carry deep cultural vibes, symbolizing grounding and protection. The Chief Minister praised Akshita’s work, calling it a brilliant way to revive Himachal’s rich heritage crafts. He congratulated her for blending old traditions with modern designs, creating products that keep the state’s culture alive and kicking.
Akshita isn’t new to this scene. As a creative consultant, she focuses on craft, culture, and sustainable design. Over the last five years, she’s teamed up with local artisans and government groups in Himachal Pradesh. Her projects include empowering weavers, curating exhibitions, and linking crafts to markets—all while telling powerful stories of sustainability.
One of her big wins? Reviving the ancient hemp Pulla craft in Gadagushaini village. She’s also designed special gifts for big names like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and spiritual leader Sadhguru. Akshita even showcased Himachal’s heritage at the G20 Summit in New Delhi. Today, she keeps pushing forward, working with startups, institutions, and artisan communities to make traditional crafts a vibrant part of daily life in her home state.
On the same day, Chief Minister Sukhu turned his attention to healthcare. He led a key review meeting for the Medical Education Department, promising major upgrades to all medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh within the next year. The goal? Give locals top-notch healthcare right at home, so no one has to travel out of state for treatment.
Sukhu highlighted how the government is smoothing out operations in these colleges. Robotic surgery has already rolled out at Chamiyana Super-Speciality Hospital and Tanda Medical College, with plans to expand it step by step to other facilities. He checked on staff, equipment, and machinery availability, assuring everyone that modern medical machines are on the way. Best part? Funds won’t be an issue—the state is fully committed to boosting health services for all.
