Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani praised the Gaza ceasefire plan from US President Donald Trump, saying it hits the main goals set by mediators. The plan aims to stop the killing and displacement of Palestinians right away. He called on everyone involved to grab this chance and end the war in Gaza once and for all.
In a Wednesday interview with Al Jazeera, Sheikh Mohammed revealed that Qatar passed the proposal—already supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—to Hamas negotiators. They talked over the big-picture terms. Sure, the plan faces real hurdles in putting it into action, but it tackles the top priority: ending the bloodshed in Gaza and opening doors for progress.
“Everyone agrees on stopping the war, preventing displacement, and the full withdrawal of the Israeli army,” Sheikh Mohammed said. “These are the three key points. And the people directly responsible for running Gaza are the Palestinians themselves.” He made it clear the focus stays on protecting Gaza’s residents.
Al Jazeera noted that Netanyahu apologized to Qatar on Monday for the death of a Qatari citizen in an Israeli strike on Hamas leaders in Doha last month. Sheikh Mohammed got the apology during a joint call with Trump and Netanyahu at the White House.
This 20-point Gaza ceasefire proposal has strong backing from Arab and Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Turkiye, and Indonesia. If everyone signs on, attacks in Gaza would halt immediately, and full aid would flow into the area to help those in need.
Turkiye’s representatives are now joining the mediation talks in Doha as part of the US initiative. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari told reporters on Tuesday that Turkiye is working closely with the team.
The plan lays out quick steps: Hamas would release all Israeli captives within 72 hours of agreement. In return, Israel would free nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas leaders would step aside from power, give up weapons, and get amnesty. An international force would handle security for a while and train local Palestinian police. A non-political, expert committee would take over temporary governance in Gaza.
Sheikh Mohammed warned that key details—like how Israel pulls out troops and what the future Palestinian government looks like—still need hashing out. “This is mostly up to the Palestinians and Israelis, but the wider international community has to support it with a clear legal setup at the UN Security Council,” he added.
Hamas hasn’t given an official reply yet, but Qatar says the group will review the Gaza ceasefire plan carefully. Trump set a tight deadline of three to four days for a response, warning that rejection would bring serious consequences.
This latest ceasefire push happens as Israel ramps up its operations in Gaza City, almost two years after the war started on October 7, 2023. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israeli strikes have killed 66,097 Palestinians and wounded 168,536. Aid blockades have also led to 453 deaths from hunger.
