In the hilly district of Chamoli, Uttarakhand, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is changing lives by helping thousands of low-income families build their dream homes. This popular central government scheme, part of the “Housing for All” mission, has already completed 1,536 pucca houses out of 1,818 applications from nine urban local bodies in the area.
Families who once squeezed into flimsy, temporary huts now enjoy solid homes with all the essentials—clean water supply, electricity, kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets. It’s more than just a roof over their heads; PMAY brings stability, self-respect, and a fresh boost of confidence to these beneficiaries.
Take Vinod Lal from Basantpur in Gochar Nagar, for example. He used to struggle in a kutcha house while barely making ends meet. But thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, he now lives in a sturdy, fully built home. Overjoyed, Vinod shared with us, “We didn’t have a proper place to stay before. After applying under PMAY, we got help to construct our house. Now, we’re living with dignity in our new home. We’re so happy and grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for turning this dream into reality.
His wife, Kalpeshwari Devi, feels the same way. “We’re a poor family, but this government scheme gave us a house. We added a kitchen, bathroom, and toilet—it’s brought real dignity to our lives. We thank the government from the bottom of our hearts.”
In tough border and hill areas like Chamoli, where rugged terrain and scarce resources make housing projects challenging, PMAY keeps delivering hope to thousands. This success story shows how focused government efforts can create lasting change for the most vulnerable people. For families like Vinod and Kalpeshwari, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana isn’t just a program—it’s a game-changer for a dignified life.
