One dies in MP’s Khandwa as DJ vehicle crashes; drowning in Shahdol pushes death toll to 16

In a heartbreaking incident during a Durga idol immersion procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district, a speeding DJ vehicle crashed into a group of devotees, killing one young man and injuring four others. The accident happened Thursday in Anjangaon village under the Pandhana police station, adding to a wave of tragedies that has claimed 17 lives across the state in just two days.
Ramdas, the victim who died at the scene, was dancing to the lively DJ music as part of the procession when the vehicle from a nearby event lost control and slammed into the crowd from behind. Chaos erupted immediately, with locals rushing to help the injured and rushing them to the Pandhana Health Centre. Two of the hurt devotees, in serious condition, were later moved to Khandwa District Hospital for better care.
The DJ vehicle’s driver sped off right after the crash, sparking outrage among villagers who set the abandoned vehicle on fire. Police teams, including CSP Abhinav Barange, Tehsildar Mahesh Solanki, and TI Dhiresh Dharwal, arrived quickly to calm the crowd and restore order. They also headed to the hospital to check on the injured and handle arrangements for Ramdas’s post-mortem.
This crash is part of a string of idol immersion accidents shaking Madhya Pradesh. In Shahdol district, two young men drowned in the Son River while taking part in similar rituals, pushing authorities to launch full investigations into both cases. Meanwhile, police are hunting for the fleeing driver and urging people to stay calm and help with the probe.
The rising death toll has ignited urgent calls for better safety during religious processions, especially those with big vehicles and loud sound systems. Among the other incidents, 11 people—including eight children—lost their lives in a separate Durga idol immersion mishap, while two more died when a tractor trolley flipped into a river near Ujjain.
Community leaders and civil groups are pressing officials to step up with stricter rules: think crowd control, vehicle inspections, and safe zones for immersions. As festivals continue, many hope these tragedies will lead to real changes to keep future celebrations joyful and secure.
