Bangladesh Tribunal to deliver verdict against former PM Sheikh Hasina today

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh is set to announce its verdict on Thursday in a case that could change the country’s political landscape. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faces charges of crimes against humanity, including murder, tied to the violent uprising that toppled her government in July 2024.

To keep the final session under control, the ICT has tightened access to the courtroom. Only a handful of reporters and a limited public crowd are allowed inside while the hearing takes place.

Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, has responded with a strong warning. Party leaders have called on citizens to observe a nationwide dawn‑to‑dusk lockdown on Thursday, urging the country to “stand united in defense of democracy.” They argue the charges are a political attack aimed at silencing Hasina and erasing the party’s influence.

Earlier this year, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, Z.I. Khan Panna, tried to join the defense team for Hasina. His application was rejected by the ICT during the testimony phase, with the tribunal stating it was “too late to appoint new counsel.” The state had already named Supreme Court lawyer Amir Hossain to represent Hasina.

The case stems from the July 2024 student‑led protests that forced Hasina to step down after weeks of fierce demonstrations. She fled to India on August 5, 2024, and an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was installed. A United Nations report estimates that over 1,400 people may have died during the riots.

The verdict, expected Thursday, will be watched closely by voters, international observers, and the global community, as it could shape Bangladesh’s future for years to come.
