Electronics manufacturing expanding fast, to emerge as big employment sector: Ashwini Vaishnaw
India’s electronics manufacturing scene is booming, with fresh suppliers and innovative designs popping up every week, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared on Monday. As the head of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Vaishnaw highlighted how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) fuel this growth, turning the sector into a major job creator for the country in the years ahead.
“Electronics manufacturing ecosystem is expanding. Every week new suppliers, mostly small and medium enterprises, are developing,” Vaishnaw posted on X, formerly Twitter. He also pointed out that design skills are sharpening, with new ideas and advanced production methods making India’s electronics industry more competitive globally.
Vaishnaw’s upbeat take comes as India shifts gears from simple assembly work to cutting-edge chip design and production. Just earlier this month, he kicked off ARM’s new semiconductor design center in Bengaluru. This hub focuses on 2-nanometer chip technology—a big milestone, as it’s the first time India designs such advanced 2nm chips at home.
These tiny transistors pack a punch: they boost efficiency, cut power use, and power next-gen gadgets in artificial intelligence (AI), smartphones, and high-speed computing. Plus, they hold key strategic value for national security, space missions, and defense tech.
The push comes through the India Semiconductor Mission, backed by a hefty Rs 76,000 crore budget. So far, officials have greenlit 10 projects totaling Rs 1.6 lakh crore across six states. Under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, homegrown startups have pushed forward 23 chip design projects, and 72 companies now tap into top-tier design tools.
With this momentum, electronics manufacturing in India looks set to create tons of jobs and solidify the nation’s spot in the global tech race.
