Brazil’s vice‑president Geraldo Alckmin landed in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three‑day visit aimed at boosting trade ties with India. He will head the first Trade Ministerial Review Meeting with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, a key event under the India‑Brazil strategic partnership.
The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed him on X, calling the visit a “momentum‑boosting” step for deeper ties between the two countries. Alckmin’s agenda includes meetings with Vice‑President C P Radhakrishnan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaisankar and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri. He will also attend the India‑Brazil Business Forum and tour the All India Institute of Ayurveda.
India and Brazil have long seen each other as major trade partners—Brazil is the largest South‑American partner for India. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July 2025 state visit, the two leaders set a goal to grow bilateral trade to USD 20 billion in five years. This target will be discussed again at the Trade Ministerial Review, where the two sides plan to identify new priority sectors and chart a roadmap to hit the target.
The visit follows a recent meeting on October 7 where India’s Rajesh Agrawal and Brazil’s Tatiana Lacerda Prazeres co‑chaired a session on the India‑Brazil Trade Monitoring Mechanism. They reviewed current trade figures, expanded the India‑MERCOSUR preferential trade agreement, and tackled market access, visa issues, and collaboration opportunities in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, MSMEs, banking, and internal trade.
Alckmin’s trip underscores the strong partnership that has developed under common leaders—Modi in India and President Luiz Inacio Lula in Brazil. Both sides remain focused on driving growth, investment, and economic partnership across a wide range of sectors, with the USD 20 billion goal as a central milestone.
