Defence, business to top agenda of Rajnath Singh’s Australia visit from Oct 9

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will head to Australia on a two‑day trip from October 9‑10 to meet his Australian counterpart, Richard Marles, and chat with business leaders in Sydney. The visit, invited by Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister, marks the first time an Indian defence chief has travelled to Canberra under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration since 2014.
It comes as India and Australia celebrate five years of their India‑Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). The highlights include a high‑level bilateral talk between the two ministers and a roundtable that will bring together industry leaders from both sides.
During the trip, Singh will sign three key agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in information sharing, the maritime domain and joint military activities. The new deals follow a growing pattern of defence ties—military‑to‑military exchanges, training programmes, ship visits and joint exercises—that has deepened in recent years.
India and Australia upgraded their relationship from a Strategic Partnership in 2009 to a CSP in 2020, and the countries share common values as pluralistic, Westminster‑style democracies and Commonwealth members. Strong people‑to‑people links, including many Indian students studying in Australia and vibrant tourism and sporting ties, continue to strengthen this enduring partnership.
