Srinagar, Dec 12 (LatestNewsX) – Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a senior religious and separatist leader, voiced alarm at the recent wave of arrests tied to cases that date back several decades. Speaking to the Friday worshippers at the Jama Masjid, he highlighted the growing unease among the local population, particularly among those who have long ago moved away from past political activities. “This has created a lot of anxiety and uncertainty, especially among those persons and their families who have long since disengaged from past paths,” he added.
The Mirwaiz noted that thousands of Kashmiris are currently imprisoned in facilities both inside and outside Jammu and Kashmir, many of whom have been held for years. He insisted that each new detention only deepens the suffering of families and adds to the region’s collective anguish. He warned that continued imprisonment in distant prisons is raising serious humanitarian and legal concerns, often stretching the trial process, limiting family visits, and violating principles of humane treatment and natural justice.
Calling on the Union Territory government to take action, he urged a reassessment of these long‑standing cases and the relocation of detained individuals back to Jammu and Kashmir to secure a swifter, fairer, and more compassionate judicial process. He also asked authorities to halt further arrests and detentions of those who are no longer involved in violence.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also serves as the Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. Following the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, both the Mirwaiz-led and the late Syed Ali Shah Geelani‑led separatist coalitions have been dissolved, with most members breaking ties with the separatist political movement. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference was originally established to provide a political forum for the armed secessionist struggle.
