As Bihar’s political scene buzzes with excitement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ramps up preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. Speculation about poll dates is running high, especially now that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar plans to visit Patna in late September to check on everything.
The ECI will release the final voter list on September 30, paving the way for an announcement of the Bihar election schedule any day after that. During his trip, Kumar will meet with local election officials to go over key details like administrative setup, voter list handling, and logistics for a smooth voting process.
One big change this time: Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will display color photos of candidates alongside their party symbols. This move aims to boost transparency and make it easier for voters to spot their choices at the polling booth.
Drawing from past Bihar Assembly elections, the ECI likely plans to hold voting in three to four phases. They’ll factor in security needs and logistical challenges, especially with major festivals like Diwali and Chhath falling around the same time. Organizers want to ensure these celebrations don’t disrupt voter turnout.
For context, the 2020 Bihar elections unfolded in three phases—October 28, November 3, and November 7—with results out on November 10. Back in 2015, polls stretched over five phases from October 12 to November 5. The 2010 elections took six phases, starting October 21 and wrapping up November 20. And in 2005, Bihar saw two separate three-phase elections, one in February and another in October.
Kumar’s visit hints that the Bihar poll dates announcement could drop as early as October, kicking off the official campaign season. With parties already hashing out alliances, seat-sharing deals, and strategies, this news will only amp up the energy across the state.
