Students from the University of Mauritius turned the campus into a Diwali‑festive hub on Tuesday, lighting diyas and sharing sweets to celebrate the festival of lights and reinforce the lasting bond between India and Mauritius.
Anurag Srivastava, India’s High Commissioner to Mauritius, kicked off the evening. He welcomed the students and highlighted the deep friendship that the two island nations share, saying India and Mauritius are “two nations in name, one family in spirit.” Srivastava reminded the crowd that the next generation of students must carry forward this partnership and urged them to pursue excellence.
The High Commissioner also spoke about educational opportunities. He mentioned fully funded scholarships for Mauritian students at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, the Know India Programme (KIP) that offers cultural immersion, and the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card available to people of Indian origin. All of these avenues help strengthen ties and give students a chance to connect with India.
Throughout the event, students performed cultural shows and showed off shared heritage, illustrating the vibrant people‑to‑people link between the two countries. The Indian High Commission applauded this showcase of mutual culture and cooperation.
The celebration comes at a time of renewed high‑level talks. Last month, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi. They reviewed the Enhanced Strategic Partnership and explored new ways to collaborate across sectors, from infrastructure and employment to healthcare and education.
During that meeting, Modi announced a special economic package for Mauritius to support key development projects, while Ramgoolam praised India’s ongoing aid. He noted that India’s expertise has helped Mauritius progress in health, education and capacity‑building, and that this support continues to improve the lives of Mauritians.
In short, the Diwali event at the University of Mauritius underscored a strong and growing friendship between India and Mauritius—an alliance that blends cultural ties, educational exchange and strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean Region.
