Attack on CJI: Karnataka Police file FIR against accused lawyer

Bengaluru – Karnataka police filed a criminal complaint on Wednesday against 71‑year‑old lawyer Rakesh Kishore for attempting to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during a session in the Supreme Court. The case, filed as a Zero‑FIR, allows the police to register an offence even if it occurred outside the location of the police station.
The complaint, based on a report from Bhaktavachala, president of the All India Advocates’ Association, cites Sections 132 and 133 of the Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita. These sections cover assault on a public servant and the use of criminal force with the intent to dishonour a person. Police will hand the matter over to the New Delhi police for further action.
According to the FIR, on October 6, Mr. Kishore hurled a shoe at the dais in Court Hall No. 1 while Chief Justice Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran were present. The complainant urged the police to file a case to protect the dignity of the judiciary.
Lawyers staged a silent protest outside the State High Court, demanding Kishore’s arrest. They argued that the act was a serious affront to judicial independence and called for a thorough investigation. “Throwing a slipper at a judge in the name of religion is utterly indefensible,” said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee also penned a letter to Prime Minister Modi, requesting a judicial inquiry and swift action against the caste‑based attack on the Chief Justice. The incident sits at the intersection of legal, political, and social tensions, underscoring concerns over respect for the rule of law.
