La Liga: Real Madrid makes it five wins from five; Villarreal, Valencia also win

Real Madrid kicked off their La Liga season with a perfect record, notching five straight wins after a solid 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu. The third-placed visitors arrived unbeaten but couldn’t keep up. Defender Eder Militao broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a stunning long-range strike, and Kylian Mbappe sealed the deal early in the second half with a sharp finish.

In another thrilling La Liga clash, Villarreal fought back from behind to edge Osasuna 2-1. Osasuna played with 10 men after Valentin Rosier’s double yellow in the 39th minute, but they shocked the crowd by taking the lead through Ante Budimir’s penalty in the 50th. Georges Mikautadze equalized for Villarreal in the 68th, and the hosts snatched the winner five minutes from full time when Pape Gueye’s unlucky deflection looped into the net.

Valencia pulled off a surprise 2-0 home win against a dominant Athletic Bilbao, who saw their game unravel after Dani Vivian’s controversial red card in the 60th minute. Baptiste Santamaria fired Valencia ahead in the 72nd, and Hugo Duro wrapped it up with a goal in stoppage time.

Sevilla grabbed a hard-fought 2-1 road win at Alaves, thanks to strikes from Ruben Vargas and Alexis Sanchez. Alaves pulled one back via Carlos Vicente’s penalty, but it wasn’t enough to stop Sevilla’s momentum in this key La Liga matchup.

Girona coach Michel Sanchez faces growing pressure after a shocking 4-0 home loss to Levante. Things went from bad to worse for Girona, who lost Axel Witsel to a red card after just 30 minutes and Victor Reis shortly after halftime, leaving them with nine men for most of the second half. Levante capitalized with goals from Etta Eyong, Carlos Alvarez, Ivan Romero, and Goduine Koyalipou.

Wrapping up the action, Real Betis claimed a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad on Friday night, leaving the visitors still searching for their first La Liga point this season. Cucho Hernandez scored early for Betis, but Brais Mendez leveled things up. A blunder by Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro gifted Betis the lead right before halftime, and Pablo Fornals added the third with about 20 minutes to go.
