Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia is still in a life‑threatening condition at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she has been admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under the care of both local and foreign specialists, according to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who appeared at a press conference held late Saturday night in the party’s Gulshan office.
Mr Alamgir said, “As you all know, the undisputed leader of Bangladesh and the Mother of Democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia, has been in Evercare Hospital for several days in a serious health condition.” He added that the 80‑year‑old former prime minister has not yet shown any sign of improvement, remaining “critical” as reported by the media.
Zia has long struggled with a series of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis and kidney problems. She was first taken to Evercare on November 23 for a routine check‑up, during which a chest infection was detected and she was subsequently admitted for further treatment.
A medical team headed by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder has been closely monitoring her care, but her health has deteriorated in the last two days. In response, the BNP staged special prayers across the country on Friday, hoping for her recovery, as local outlets noted.
Adding to the growing concern, Zia’s son and the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, posted on Facebook, “During such a crisis, like any son, I deeply long for my mother’s affection and presence. But, unlike others, the opportunity to make an independent decision in this regard is neither open nor entirely within my control.”
Earlier that afternoon, Tarique Rahman’s adviser and BNP spokesperson Mahedi Amin also announced on Facebook that arrangements were being made to transfer Zia for treatment abroad. He indicated that steps were underway to fly her to London for advanced care, including the setup of a specially equipped air ambulance. However, doctors have confirmed that her condition does not yet permit travel.
