Tesla delivers 1st car in India as Maharashtra minister buys Model Y

Tesla Launches in India: First Delivery Made in Mumbai

Good news for electric vehicle fans in India! Tesla has officially started delivering its innovative electric cars in the country. On Friday, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik became the very first customer to take home a Tesla in India. He received his Model Y from the new Tesla showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.

Sarnaik shared that his main goal in buying the Tesla is to promote awareness about electric mobility. He said, “I bought this car to encourage more people, especially young children, to understand the importance of sustainable transportation.” He also plans to gift the car to his grandson to symbolize the future of eco-friendly travel.

Despite the excitement of Tesla’s entry into India, the initial response has been quieter than expected. Since bookings started in mid-July, Tesla has received a little over 600 orders, according to reports. globally, Tesla sells this many cars in just a few hours, so the demand in India is still growing.

Tesla plans to ship around 350 to 500 cars to India this year. The first batch arrived from Shanghai in early September. Deliveries are currently limited to select cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram.

Tesla’s India strategy focuses on setting a good example for others. Sarnaik emphasized that even if electric cars cost a bit more today, it’s important to lead by example and help accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Maharashtra is also supporting the shift to electric vehicles. The state offers incentives like toll exemptions on key highways such as Atal Setu and Samruddhi Expressway. It has also ordered about 5,000 electric buses to promote sustainable transportation.

Meanwhile, Tesla is busy expanding in India. The company is setting up charging stations in Mumbai and Delhi and plans to open a new Tesla experience centre in South India next year. These steps aim to make Tesla cars more accessible and encourage more Indians to switch to electric vehicles.

India’s electric vehicle market is warming up with Tesla’s arrival, signaling a bright future for clean and green transportation.
